In my opinion and the opinions of about 6 of my friends, Mt. Katahdin is the finest hike you can do in New England. The scenery is spectacular from Moose and Bear at the lower elevations to 50+ mile vistas at the top. The best way to do it is to camp at the park and walk up early in the day (total time up and back is about 8 hours if you are in decent shape). There is a "knife-edge" on the top formed by two glaciers pushing rocks ahead into each other which is a pretty amazing walk. If you can't camp you can also stay nearby and drive in early in the morning. Take bug spray and wear good hiking boots as the surface is largely rock.
