Living in Boston and having gone to college in VT, I'm a bit partial to the Green Mountain State If you are coming from the north, take 89 south to Burlington...great small city right on Lake Champlain. Good restaurants, Church Street pedestrian area is great. Route 116 or Route 7 south towards Middlebury (my alma mater), Route 125 from East Middlebury is a great road over the Midd Gap, and Route 116 to Route 17(?) from Bristol towards the Waitsfield/Warren/Sugarbush area is the Appalacian Gap, one of the best windy roads in the whole Northeast. AND it was recently repaved!!! Great view at the top too. Route 100 and 107 and really nice as well, as you head back to 89 to head south towards Boston.
Quechee and Woodstock are beautiful (the last exit on 89 in VT heading south), and I highly recommend Simon Pearce (glassworks and restaurant) has a great restaurant too.
There are great B&Bs all around there. The Hanover/Lebanon/Dartmouth College area is also really nice too.
Just watch out for road rage as you cross into Massachusetts! Road rage was born in this state!!!! From Boston, it's an hour up I-95 to the Maine border...Freeport, Portland, Kennebunkport and many other great towns
Enjoy!
