I know this has been hashed out a few times but I though I'd see if there are any new insights. I'm usually good at chiming in when other people are looking at cars but can never quite decide for myself.

It's time for a new "family car" for my wife to drive. We sold her BMW 3-series convertible (much to her extreme disappointment) but with our first baby on the way, it is time for a more practical car for the next few years. After looking at Saab*, BMW, Subaru, and just about everything else out there, we've narrowed it down to the following:

A previous generation (~2003-05) VW Passat Wagon V6 (4Motion or not - doesn't matter much) or,
A previous gen (~2003-04) Audi A6 Avant

They are similar cars but the VW has slightly better crash-test results and is obviously cheaper, both to buy and maintain. However, the Audi is a bit more up-scale making the transition from her fun convertible to a wagon a bit easier to accept. Any major advantages I may be overlooking?

Another question for you parents is will a wagon suffice (need room for the family dog so a sedan won't work well) or should we break down and do the SUV thing. I'm not too pleased with the thought of an SUV due to many factors, mainly: they aren't as safe, typically gas hogs (although the above mentioned wagons aren't necessarily fuel efficient), and we really don't need to tow anything yet. I'm not convinced we need one but if someone has a compelling argument, I'm all ears.

* yes, I tried to get her into a Saab SC but she wasn't up for it and the BMW 3-series wagon is over-priced, underpowered, and too small, and the Subaru just didn't appeal to her so the VW/Audi family is all that's left.

Any thoughts?
