A few years ago a fellow grad student was looking to replace his old Saturn. He complained that he hadn't found any compact cars he liked. I asked if he'd checked out the Mazda Protege since they were well reviewed. The very next day he showed up and told me he'd bought one - a sedan, auto. I was very surprised. By contrast, it took me 3 months of test drives and research to settle on a used Honda Odyssey last summer when I knew up front it was the best minivan on the market.
I will never understand how people can commit to 3-5 years of payment on something they'll need to use nearly every day without carefully weighing every factor in the purchase, especially when cars are usually the 2nd most expensive things people buy in life after houses.
3 months later the guy was complaining he should have gotten a Protege5 with a manual trans.
