A buddy of mine is a mechanic who specializes in foreign autos and drives a C900.
He hates the previous generation Passsats (especially the 1.8T) and advises his customers to steer clear of them. Just this week an oil pan replacement on a previous gen. Passat took him five hours.
Last time I was in his shop there was prev. gen A4 owner (similar to the passat) who was completely fed up with his habitually problematic A4.
However, he always has good things to say about the previous gen. A6. He claims they haven't as many problems as the Passats or A4s and are much easier to work on.
hope that helps.
