We have a 3 series wagon and a 9-5 wagon. Both great. Since the 9-5 doesn't seem to appeal (?) and the 3 is too small.. I'd vote for a 5 series. The previous generation is widely considered one of the finest cars ever. You get strong BMW durability, the same cache that she had with the convertible and it's big enough with out getting into a fat, clumbsy SUV. They depreciate a good deal -most likely since everyone wants SUVs.
I have to add also.. I rent a lot of SUVs for hauling stuff for my job. Right now I have a rental Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has about the same cargo/passenger space as the 9-5 and gets.. no joke, on the country roads of upstate NY at 55 miles an hour... 17.5mpg. Atrocious. A lot of people think truck= space, but check the numbers. It's not always true. Get something fun, nimble, easy to park and the change from convertible to wagon will be easy.
