My wife and I bought ours new and now, 6 years later with 56k on it, it's still perfect. Looks and drives like new. We've had VERY few minor problems with it and it's very cheap to insure and drive. We have the 1.8t Tiptronic and it has plenty of power. Ours is one of the first wagons that was the updated cosmetic (the one you're looking at) and it was bumped up to 170hp starting with that year (previous years had been 150hp). The V6 is only 20 more and has just about the same torque, IIRC. Our 1.8t gets about 31 or 32 mpg on the highway about about 23 or 24 mpg in the city. My wife has a bit of a lead foot and doesn't modulate the accellerator well, so, I'm sure we could better the city mileage, but, whaddaya gonna do?

As for the A6, it's definitely bigger than the Passat. The back seat is a lot roomier. It's pretty bulletproof and is beautifully built. The fit and finish and the quality of the materials of the A6 are substantially better than the 9-5, but, the 9-5 is a bit sportier to drive.

I think you'd be in great shape in whichever you choose. Of course, get as much of the maintenance history on either car. Bear in mind that timing belts need to be changed at 60k intervals (which most people don't do), so, be prepared to spend about $1000 to have it done. Otherwise, there's not much more to it.

Either way you go, the dealers are fairly mediocre. VW is, actually, pretty lousy. I've used indies and I turn my own wrench, so, my costs have been very minimal. Try to find a good indie and stay away from the dealers in general.

Best of luck in your search!
