They are very well made, reliable, servicable, and superb performers. I had a 2001 VW Passat before I bought my Audi, and have owned MANY VWs and Audis. Every last one of them has been substantially more reliable than the many Saabs I've owned. They are wonderful to drive, parts are fairly cheap and are quite plentiful. User and support groups are also very plentiful. You can also get a relatively inexpensive cable and software to do all of your own trouble shooting - pretty much everything that the dealer can do.
The electrical problems of the 90s are way in the past. Overall reliability I have found to be excellent.
Now... here, though, is the problem with VW, that I've found: The majority of the dealers totally suck. Find a good indy that you trust and steer clear of dealers. Or even better yet, DIY. They are very user servicable.
For what it's worth.
