As a long time VW guy going back to the aircooled days through the 90's and having sold them in the mid-eighties and later in '00-'01 I disagree. I was also an indepedant dealer specilizing in used European imports from '01 to '06. Generally VW's are well built cars that will last a long time if cared for but every now and then you run into the VW from hell. And the rule that has held true since the aircooled days is the simpler the VW the better. As you move up the model line the worse they are. In relative terms Passats are every bit as bad as Squarebacks and 411's were back in the day. Parts are MUCH more expensive than comparible Saabs parts. I can remember a customer with a VR6 who couldn't find an alternator anywhere for less than $1200 (in '01)--at the same time I bought one from the dealer for my 9K for $200. I bought a lot of VW's as a dealer and almost everything was more expensive than comparible parts on a Saab. And don't even get me started on Audis.
