As a dealer I bought parts wholesale and I shopped online, used a variety of parts suppliers and even bought parts from wrecking yards. While you've had experience with a handfull of cars, even over 20 years, being in the car business I've had experience directly and indirectly with hundreds of cars over 40 years. I bought a lot of VW's because they sold well--and don't get me wrong there's a lot I like about them. I've generally found that part for part Saabs are less expensive. As for Audis I know a lot of people like them but I don't know what they compare them too. I was very close to the used car manager at the Audi dealer and my son specializes in late model European cars and sells a lot of Audis. Both of them agree that there always seems to be something wrong Audis and they only buy cars still under warrenty. When I worked at the Audi dealer I used to see service bills of $3 to $4k daily and one guy with a A4 w/99,000 miles had a bill of $10,000. And no, it didn't involve replacing eihter the engine or transmission. Maybe you're luckier than you know, certainly doing your own work must save thousands, but I've heard too many Audi service horror stories from too many diverse sources too believe they're cheaper to own than Saabs. You're happy with them, so good for you, but I'm sticking with what I know.
