Perhaps the transverse-mounted engine VWs are easier to work on, perhaps not, and the cars that you are considering are not all-wheel drive, which adds additional complication on mine. I will echo what some of the others have said about the degradation of plastic pieces on some of the engines (not the 12V V6, except for the PCV tubes) including the water pumps! See my previous post about my general experience with our A4.
By the way, my previous suggestion of Audiworld as a useful site is now rescinded!!! The site has been purchased by a company called Internet Brands, who removed a lot of carefully accumulated content: the A4 FAQ list was better than any manual for most normal diagnosis and repairs (I contributed some illustrated articles on the HVAC system, now can't find them online). Most of the regulars have migrated to a new site called Quattroworld - highly recommended.
