If you aren't used to modern cars it can be very disconcerting at first. When I went from my '11 Wrangler with a conventional 4 speed auto to the '14 with the modern 5 speed auto/engine management setup it felt very strange at first. But it does respond perfectly fine when you want it to and it really does work. In spite of having 80 more horsepower I actually get better mileage. It's not a "cheap band-aid", it's how modern cars get a lot better mileage than "old think" cars. And Saab did exactly the same thing 20 years ago. If you followed the upshift light (manual trans) it would seem like you were lugging it. In fact the owners manual went to great lengths to assure owners it wasn't bad for the car and would yeild better mileage
