The point being that with only 91-94 octane fuel(depending on where you live) being availble at the pump, there are severe limitations on the amount of boost and ignition advance an engine can handle and an aftermarket ECU will not change this fact. Tuners fend of detonation by either (1) using high octane race gas, or (2) run high power robbing A/F ratios using gasoline as a cooling agent, and/or (3) Retard ignition timing, or (4)use water injection as the anti-detonation agent.
I agree with you that an aftermarket ECU is a great option and applaud you for taking this project on. Who would dispute the fact that optimizing fuel delivery and ignition timing are key elements to making power? Certainly not me. To keep referring to water as a bandaide just does not make sense though. The question is - Is gasoline or water a better option for fending off detonation, being environmentally friendly, and making maximum power? Water of Course!!
As far as tuning with water goes, I agree that it will effect A/F ratio readings by making readings seem richer than they are. What you should be tuning for though is the A/F ratio that makes the best power with out detonation. Who cares if the reading with water is 13:1, but without water is 14:1. If thats what makes safe detonation free maximum power, then thats all that matters.
Well anyway, I am glad to here that you are almost through the break in period. Are you still heading back east?
