I have had my 99 9-5 Wagon flushed twice since I bought in 2004. The first time, the independent did find a bit of sludge by the oil plug.
The second time, I did it at a dealer, after becoming aware of the issues here on the board.
From my point of view, as an owner of a used vehicle without the records, I would probably be out of luck when it comes to coverage on the 8 year warranty extension for the engine. But I can control my changes now, and if there is no sludge, and you take car of the engine, it likely will not develop.
The money spent on a flush may be good for your piece of mind, plus it will help your mechanic figure out if there are any problems, now, before it becomes too expensive to fix.
You may want to see what Anders of Swedecar says, too.
