Driving conditions should be considered too. If you do mostly short trips where the oil does not warm up properly, sludge buildup is more likely as there is no chance for condensation to "burn" off. My VW has an oil temperature gauge and it takes 10 miles of driving (on a 70 degree day) for the oil to warm up to optimum temp., whereas the water temp.is up in 1-2 miles. The VW does hold 9 quarts of oil so it may take longer to warm up than the Saab's 4-5 qts., but I surmise it still takes 6-7 miles of driving to get the oil to 200 degrees F, which is where it should be.
Moral is, if you drive short distances with lots of cold starts, change oil more frequently, even when using full synthetic.
