to do the UOA and compulsive enough to do the Auto Rx. Can I do it this way (to avoid having to remove the filter myself): (1) pull the sample for the oil analysis using the pump thing Eiron suggested (question---engine warm or cold?), and then (2) add the Auto Rx (there should be room since some oil was removed for the sample), and then (3) drive 1500 miles and go in for my regular oil change (it will be 3500 miles since the last one at that point). This would be the "rinse" phase with the Auto Rx; is it OK to stay with semi-syn oil for that? I see they recommend plain old oil and I know that's cheaper, but I prefer to stay with the usual Saab oil. After the next change, 2k miles later per the Auto RX instructions, I would switch to Mobil 1. Sound like a plan?
By the way, I don't think all this oil stuff is wierd, so maybe I'm an oil nerd too. We put over 250K miles on each of my last 2 Volvos (240 series) with NO major repairs, and both engines were still in great shape, thanks to the diligent oil changes, when the cars were totalled (by the kids---not their fault, and no they weren't hurt).
