You MUST replace the thermostat with the timing belt job. Anyone who knows this job will do so as a matter of course.

The metal/plastic impeller has been a topic of discussion on VW and Audi discussion boards. I bought the "metal impeller advantage" argument and made the mistake of using a Graf pump with a metal impeller, which failed in 30,000 miles. VW/Audi does not make a metal-impeller WP that I am aware of, but they do sell "remanufactured" WPs at reasonable prices; as far as I know they have plastic impellers. Be certain what part will be used on your GF's car.

The water pump currently in your GF's car is plastic and has lasted 95,000+ miles. An exact replacement will probably last equally long; modern plastics are very different than the plastics of 20 years ago which rightfully got a bad reputation. I doubt that you will have the car after 190,000+ miles, at which point you will need another timing belt job anyway.
