Complexity and the learning curve

As stuff gets more complicated it's harder for DIYers to keep up. And any new design takes time to figure out and understand. But you get in there and get your hands dirty and some of the intimidation goes away.
But where it gets crazy is when you need some specialized training and tools to do some jobs. Audi and VW are renowned for requiring various specialized tools, which makes it harder for DIYers to do some jobs. When I worked for VW back in late '70s early '80s there were plenty of them, and it's much worse now. I'm sure BMW and Mercedes aren't much different.
Another part of this is that many cars are not designed to be serviced easily. I don't know how much of this is deliberate, as in "if we make it hard to do then people will have to take the car to the dealer for service," or if it's a matter of the design and engineering people being clueless about servicing the vehicle and the impact high service costs have on ownership.
Then again, because high service costs come after that all-important 3-year lease expires, it really doesn't matter to the first owner, and the dealer stands to make money from the 2nd or 3rd owners.
