people do diy Audis and Subies (I posted a link on the c900 bb re DIY spark plug change in an STI, and it doesn't look hard, but certainly more time consuming than in a Saab!)... but I agree, with lots of parts that need to be married to other parts electronically, it is getting tougher for DIY in some cases... though, for some manufacturers, the scan tool technology is available fairly cheaply for DIY types... some of it may be planned obsolescence, some might just be necessity to accommodate demand for (probably mostly unnecessary) features, performance, etc...
I don't own a 9-3ss, and there is a lot more scan tool dependence than for the 9-5, but it sounds like as they age, people are starting to DIY + the techs are openly problem solving on the bb... sounds like the same old same old progression of that bb, like the others... so that's great news... I'm not too worried even as we move towards electric motors etc (actually I think that will be easier diy for me with an ee background)...
