I drive an '01 9-5 Aero sedan, 5-speed; my previous Saabs were a 9000T and a 900, both 5-speeds. My wife drives an '04 ARC 9-5 wagon, automatic.
I get to drive that one from time to time.

The Aero is just a blast to drive; I'm not a speeder by any means, but the Aero just GOES! Seriously, though, on ice and snow, the 5-speed makes me feel much more "in-control," as I can slow down without touching the brakes, etc. There are some inclines around these parts that get very icy - and without the 5-speed, I'm not sure I'd even make it to the top.

The ARC in Sport mode is similar in acceleration, but even with the paddles (which I personally don't bother with...) it's not anything like the Aero - I find myself having to anticipate more, as I've basically got two choices: brake or gas pedal. To me, at least, this is much more distracting and way less intuitive than shifting manually.

FWIW, my '82 900 5-speed was my first manual transmission car; I had a lot of very funny (and embarrassing) experiences trying to figure out how to get a rented Chevette (the only 5-speed car I could find to rent for a weekend...) to shift. That car had more of a "gear bag" than a transmission! I was really hoping the salesman who sold me my brand new 900 wasn't going to watch me drive off the day I picked it up - he didn't, as it was raining cats and dogs,a nd he stayed in the showroom. But I drove off in my new Saab and didn't stall it once! I guess I had it figured out pretty well, because the original clutch went 125K before it needed work...
