Even if the technology is better (with automatics, which it inevitably will be in measurable quantities fuel economy, performance)...there is something about the driving experience.
Proof in point: Mazda miata, perfectly balanced and super fun car. Nothing exceptional in terms of technology.
The fact that the Miata is the #1 all time roadster tells you that there is a place for the human part of car design.
