...Saab get into more advanced transmission technology. My mom's Jetta 2.0T has VW's DSG automatic and it is AMAZING! It still probably won't satisfy the die-hard manual transmission fan, but it's basically a manual transmission that works the clutch for for you... but with TWO clutches! Shifts are INSTANT. Even starting from a stop on a hill you role backward until the clutch engages as if you're in a standard car.
It's a six speed and in manual mode it's very "allowing." On my 9-5 in manual mode I can be in third at any speed. I can even select it from a stop. But I have to be doing about 37mph for it to let me into 4th, and about 45 to get into 5th. In fifth at 45 I can floor the gas and it doesn't do anything because it's limiting torque. It was a scary feeling the first time I hit the gas and my car didn't respond! (If you really mash it it kicks-down automatically). With the DSG you can shove it in 6th at like 30mph and the car vibrates like hell under load but the point is you can drive like that. The VW is also very smooth at idle, even for a 4-cyl, because the transmission is completely disengaged at a stop. Long story short, the transmission makes a relatively basic car a freaking BLAST to drive.
