It's interesting that no one in this thread is comparing apples to apples, that is same year and model 9-5s with both transmissions.
I prefer manual gear boxes, but drove both versions before buying my 2006 9-5 wagon. In this car, with the 2.3 HOT I found the manual to be stiff, clumsy, and to have ratios that were not well suited to the engine's output. The automatic, while far from perfect, is in fact well matched to the 2.3's power curve. I do wish it had a console shifter like the 9-3 auto instead of the paddles, or at least paddles that engage without first having to move the console gear selector.
