I believe your words were "no reported failures" and "designed just right". Meh, not so much it seems. Just look at the posts right here.
I may be wrong but I believe the new end links I just installed were one piece, maybe I need new glasses, but...when one piece becomes two, like the one I took off...it is not only a broken part, but absolutely useless.
Yes there are some plastic, or partially plastic ones being used, and guess what? They are failing quickly and folks are replacing them as just as quick as they can. Read a Corvette or WRX forum and you will see how you could not be more incorrect about this. Heck, even Focus owners are saying how much better beefier aftermarket units are than the OEM ones they had.
They all say the same thing...too much flex in the OEM ones and they eventually BREAK at the ends. No one is going TO plastic ones for more performance. No one.
Ditto with the swizzle stick pot metal ones like we had, we were probably better off than some, sounds like the plastic ones are real junk. No positive comments about them. Read up on it, please.
