yeah, with the 900, I've always just bought the best Nokians. Had some Goodyears also - not as good, but fine. That car worked better in messy conditions with worn out Goodyears than the 9-5 with 1 year old Michelin snows, and brand new hakka R was no better! However, the Nokians were definitely better on the c900 than the Goodyears. Good tires make a difference!
The newer studs are better than studs of old, but they are noisier than without. Honestly, if you can run studs, it will help on ice. If you have many icy hills you will thank yourself. And if it allows a very open directional tread design, the package may also work better in snow. If you mainly drive on bare pavement, not so much. In that case, something like the R2 might be a good compromise (there are other brands with grit, walnut shells, etc in the tread also. I will probably try the R2 as my next winter tire, and I'm starting to think I will sell my current set before they wear out.
