Many enthusiasts here would be glad to have a running '04. We had one for ten years and 220,000 miles. Electronic gremlins finally forced a sale - to another Saab enthusiast. We went to a Volvo V50 for a few years until we found an immaculate '08 9-5 SC 2.3t with just 64,000 miles. Hope to drive it another ten years. NOTHING else like it.
True that an '04 with rust is not worth much. The question is: What's it worth TO YOU. If you like it, keep it, fix it and find something less needy (Japanese) for your child. CPO cars will be expensive. Something older but with low miles and sterling maintenance may be a better bet, you just have to look harder and cast your net further.
AC is usually easy to diagnose. There's a line under the radiator that can wear and leak. Heat could be a blend door. These cars have lots of pattern failures that are well documented. At some point you'll likely deal with sub-frame mounts, motor mounts, a crank seal, and a starter or two.
The problems never stop. They just accumulate and we fix them. The car is OK for a while and we hit another hump. Rinse & repeat. Intermittent electrical gremlins, structural rust, and part unavailability are about the only things that will force you to part with the car. As for rust, we apply Corrosion Free annually to keep it at bay.
