You say that you have two wires to the starter motor; one from the battery and one from the alternator. There should not be a wire between the alternator and starter motor, that makes no sense. The second wire to the starter motor (besides the big red one from the battery) is a small yellow wire that originates at the ignition switch. There are two wires in the vicinity of the starter motor that might be confused for that yellow wire. One is the wire for the oil pressure sending unit and the other is the field wire for the alternator, neither is yellow but they all have 1/4" female spade connectors so could be mistakenly connected to the starter. The starter motor does not require a ground wire.
