Indeed on the 'lots of gs' comment - the 'water line' in that tank isn't level at any point for that car while on course!
But back to the 900 - on your LeMons car, how far could you empty the tank before fuel-starving on turns?
And your thought about the 900 tank shape carries water, too - "...perhaps the fuel pump addresses an issue they could not address with the tank shape..."
Looking at the bottom of the 900 shows it designed to be exceptionally smooth - I assume the tank is the same - so they didn't have the design room to put a low sump in the tank - nor probably wanted to since it'd reduce the ground clearance.
