Sage advice for 1st timer convertible top installation? Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Mon, 20 Apr 2020 04:56:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well I've got my 91 C900T stripped down to the structure of the top (mechanism works AOK). My "as bought" top was poorly installed by some local hacks, was a low quality version to boot, so I've decided to restore the top to it's former glory.
I've downloaded all the top & headliner instructions which are hosted here.
Of course the top manufacturer (ConvertibleTopGuys in Rhode Island) have provided their abridged instructions.
Further that with a 25 page document put together by an enthusiast in NC years ago.
I'm at the point now of reviewing these (conflicting) sets of instructions to determine the proper reassembly order. The windscreen bow at the forward end of the top is scheduled for glue removal..... I'll begin that today with tools & lacquer thinner to try and get down to the aluminum.
I'll be looking for insulated/plastic protected clamps to hold the forward edge of the top around this front bow to hold the new SONNENDECK (TWILLFAST II) black canvas. New headliner purchased..... stainless staples, hold down cables (originals were damaged), 2 rolls of tack strip material, complete replacement glass defroster window (total $947 plus shipping).
SO it seems to me that the rear window section must be installed first to the #4 bow. The instructions are a bit vague here, but it sure seems the edges of the rear section must go UNDER the aft side sections of the top. The old B&W pics are tough to view..... and I'll be checking YouTube to see if anyone documented a top replacement there.
Those who have BTDT, please share your thoughts and advice. Thanks, folks!
