My mechanic is getting it ready and fixing everything that needs to be done and is wanting $4,000. Keep in mind the odometer says 176K miles... He dropped in a good used engine and added the larger Tdo4 mitsu turbo already. He can install the 5-speed Aero ECU for real cheap with one from the junkyard, so it is cost efficient to just do that rather than chopping wires on pin 14. Really, my big concern, after getting it set up with the same power as a 5-speed Aero is the transmission on this vehicle!
If it is the original auto trans, at 176K miles, I'm concerned about how much longer it will last!!! But you folks gave several opinions ranging from it will last a long time (just change fluids every 12K miles) to it is old and can start going very soon at that kind of mileage! So that is a huge concern and is the reason why I want to get the 5-speed Aero power but not more than that so I can make the auto trans last longer. Any insight of what to look for when I drive it in terms of the auto trans would be helpful. For instance, does the trans work fine until one day it's toast, or does it have "tell-tale" signs of wearing out??? what are those signs if any I should be looking for? Thank you all so much for your insight and advice!!!
