so the saga continues on this damn sensor. again, 1997 900T vin engine # 004031
i purchased a replacement part (90-490-477 aka B0324P09A) and pulled the old sensor which has markings as follows:
BM1 or BMI I can't tell.
09H9 or it could be 6h60
the threads are more coarse and larger diameter than the replacement part and the sensor probe is thinner as well.
if anyone can cross reference this sensor to a new, correct one, perhaps that will help someone else on this board in the future.
I put the old sensor back in because I'm not sure if it is faulty, nor do I have a replacement (or expect to find one any time soon).
The engine temperature comes up nicely now, on the gauge, whereas before it would never get to half-way so I guess the sensor does not need replacement.
i also swapped the intake manifold coolant sensor which had an apparently obsolete Bosch p/n 0280-13-094 which is superseded by 15393755 (aka ELC0052P) even though the probe on the new sensor is fatter and longer than the old model.
now onto the rear brakes!!!
