People do all kinds of nasty things to Subaru gearboxes. They are actually amazingly strong. Not to mention unique and absolutely state of the art!
The issue is very complicated. The clutch is the weak link. Subaru engineers make it weak ON PURPOSE. It is the part that is supposed to take the grunt of all load and to slip or break in order to save the rest of the drivetrain. Because ungodly amount of traction available (especially with fat, sticky performance tires people put on these cars) it would be very easy to snap a driveshaft or strip the input shaft or break a gear. Subaru gearboxes also take a LONG time to break in. It takes about 30k miles for a Subaru gearbox to completely loosen up. On top of that, they don't like to be rushed. You really need to be patient and careful when shifting a Subaru gearbox. I have had three manual Subarus so far and every one of them was a great pleasure to shift. Smooth and positive is what I would call them.
