Think of the load a 300 hp turbocharged engine puts on an AWD drivetrain with four fat maximum performance tires. This load is far greater than in a SAAB.

The traction capabilities of a stock SAAB drivetrain are dismal. When I accelerate hard in my lowly non-turbo 900, I can put a 30 foot stripe of melted rubber *on dry pavement* EASY! The open differential and unequal driveshafts make one side spin at the slightest provocation.

Compare this to the new Impreza WRX STi. With THREE locking differentials, a 300 hp, 300 ft-lbs engine, equal length driveshafts, sticky max performance tires. Where does all this torque go when the bonehead behind the wheel revs the engine and dumps the clutch at 7000 rpm with the pedal to the floor?!! With stock clutch the clutch slips like there is no tomorrow and takes the bulk of the torque. Do this ONCE, even not so severely, and the clutch disk is damaged, producing CLUTCH SHUDDER. Do this several times and the flywheel will overheat. Now imagine the owner does not like the fact that his clutch slips so much. Or does not like the SHUDDERING. Imagine he goes out and installs a clutch set with increased capasity (read AFTERMARKET.) Now what? Next time he has a brain fart and sidesteps the clutch at 7000 rpm with the turbo on boost he snaps a driveshaft. At best. Or breaks a gear. Or the crankshaft. Think about it.
