I didn't think they were saying any more than just 'wait for the synchros to do their work'. Don't just slam it in. That's not a unique Subaru feature.
I don't think they were saying not to match revs, either. I think they were saying don't over-rev & slip when engaging the new gear. They said the clutch is the weak link - deliberately.
Our '89 900 took a bit of time for the synchros to work, but with a bit of muscle you could force it through & grind. I can shift my Integra GS-R faster than the '89 900. GS-R can shift faster then our '01 9³, too. They're all different, but the concept is the same.
I test-drove a WRX & it had really strong synchros. It MADE you wait for the machinery. It also had a pretty short throw & it felt more direct even than my GS-R. Makes sense, because the transmission is much closer to the shift lever.
With a front-drive car the limiting load on the machinery is no larger than whatever it takes to break traction. 4WD takes a lot more force to break traction, so something else will break first...
