I owned a 1990 Legacy 2.2 normally aspirated 5-speed for 10 years and put 420,000 kms on it. The clutch was only replaced once at 350,000 when it started to chatter and grab too much. The trans was otherwise untouched.
During the first year of ownership or so, it became apparent that the 2nd gear synchro was the weak spot. You had to shift smoothly, and carefully and not too fast. Fast shifts into 2nd either up or down, almost guaranteed a crunch. I very quickly developed the habit of double clutching on downshifts. Outside of that, the trans was trouble free while I owned the car. FWIW, I had Amsoil in the trans and rear diff since 6,000 kms.
That car was bullit proof! It was definitely the best, strongest, and most reliable car that I have ever owned. (It was also one of the slowest!)
