Hey guys. I figured I'd just ask some advice on here, as SAABers are an intelligent bunch, and I'm sure many of you have been through what I am thinking of going through.

I'm 23 years old. In a nutshell, I am unhappy with my current job in more ways that one. In general, I think I'm in the wrong field (Programming/IT, degree in Information Systems)...and my particular job seems especially bad for additional reasons.

I'm considering going back to graduate school, I'd like to get a PHD. I'm not sure I'm cut out for a 9 to 5 job, I don't really like answering to people (well I guess thats a broad statement, if I respect the person, I don't mind of course), and I like to be creative. An office job is not for me, I like to interact with people. As an undergraduate, I was selected to be a Teaching Assistant for 2 classes(a history class, and a physics class), and I enjoyed the experience. I got to create exams, grade exams, grade papers, have office hours, etc...it was fun, and extremely gratifying. This has made me think I'd really like to do research, and maybe become a professor. I'd feel like I was really making a difference, and putting my mind to good use, rather than simply making money for some corporation.

The exact field of study I'd like to get into is something I'm still mulling over. But, I was wondering if anyone has gone down this path, and could tell me what its like....any advice you may have....what kind of opportunities are really out there?.....do graduate schools usually help support PHD student?...As a graduate student, how did you get by as far as money?.....etc...

I really appreciate any advice, pointers, or just stories, that anyone has to offer.

Alex
