My thesis defense for my PhD in experimental biophysics is a month away. One thing to note: graduate school is a long slog. It's taken me 5.5 years post-bachelor's to get here. I have a friend in biomedical engineering who's taken 10 years. You have to be really dedicated and do well on not much free time or money.

You should also pick your advisor and research group very, very carefully. One chemistry group at Harvard has had 2 suicides in 10 years due to the terrible work climate, although this is certainly an extreme. Potential advisors should be very upfront about publications, conference attendance, time off, hours expected, and so on. Make sure you like them and your co-workers since you'll be spending a lot of time with them. I know one group whos students go on to any research field but what they've done in that lab since the 3 profs are so hard on them and so miserable to work for.

Graduate school is quite an experience, so study something you love, and be open to fields you didn't expect! Post-grad work also includes the possibility of postdoctoral work to boost your bona fides as a researched, which is what I'm doing - I'll be studying brain cancer and pretending to be a biologist for a few years.

And finally, IT/comp sci: carefully consider the future demand for knowledge in this field. Note the number of IT jobs being shipped to India, and look into how much a doctorate is really worth out there in the programming job market. The suggestion of looking into bioinformatics is a very good one.
