Your right that the recent history makes it hard to judge the future of IT. However, off shoring is a significant and increasing threat that is going to make competition for the jobs that remain much tougher. I work for a large US company and we no longer make anything in the US. Those jobs were being lost for years and that process was 100% completed a couple years ago. Now they are in the process of doing for IT what they did for manufacturing. We have dumped a number of US IT workers and have hired almost no new ones (only a couple key replacements). However, our off short work force is increasing rapidly. The philosophy is that we will hire locally only people who are potential management or project management people and all the basic technical work should be directed to India.
