Most graduate science programs support their students as either graduate research associates (working 60hrs/week for 20hrs week pay in research lab) or else as teaching assistants (working for ~15 hours a week as a TA and getting paid for 20 hours, then working 60 hours a week on research for your advisor... well maybe that's an exaggeration in the time aspect)
I've enjoyed graduate school, although as graduation comes closer I'm looking forward to earning a normal salary. I don't really think of my research work in terms of LIFE CHANGING IMPORTANCE, and I doubt very few others in the department differ in their perception of their work. Your life has all the meaning you impute it. If you really want to feel like you're making a difference you'd do better to try out an "urban poverty improvement project" ie salvation army, soup kitchen, big brother program etc.
Teaching is fun though - maybe I misread you. Graduate school certainly hasn't been a 9-5 job for me, its more like 9am to midnight with a 3 hour break to see my wife in the evening. The most perverse part is that as I'm doing theory, the problems never leave my head. I even think about them after a few beers.
