Alex,
I spent a good deal of my life in college and the amount of politics that is involved in your typical grad school, especially in a PhD, must be seen to be believed (pick right advisor, school, topic, etcand if you mess up, punt). Then, once someone gets the skin, and wants a job in Academia, because you need to bring money in (grants, etc), get tenure, etc.
At the end, you end up being very specialized, and risk serious underemployment if your academic plans don't work out the way you wanted them. 20 years ago there was always the 'small teaching college job' path, but nowdays the odds are not very good.
Another issue to remember is that unless your name is at the front door, you're likely to have good assignments and bad assignments. For every month I spent doing cutting edge research into software development environments, I spent an equal month creating accounts for the dreaded bug tracking software we used to use. With things the way they are now in IT (outsourcing, etc) I'd be looking for a parachute somewhere along the next 3-5 years. You can survive and do well but you have to have something very unique.
There used to be a very good Usenet group discussing these issues (sci.research.careers I think). Check it out.
