Assuming that you'd continue to be a somewhat serious rider after the charity ride, I'd suggest you look into used Trek OCLV's. They are the best in terms of rider comfort - stiff without jarring your back teeth. I've done 22 500 mile tours and the last 2 or 3 on an OCLV were the best by far. I'm 6'2" and ride a 62CM and found the traditional cro-moly bikes to flex a lot causing a loss of power to the road. The frames are lifetime warrantied and super light as well. A medium grade Shimano group would satisfy your needs and you could probably find one with STI shifting as well.
