Gary - In addition to Philly's good suggestions (my professional favorite is Loewen, but spec lots of Marvin) see if any of the Jeld-Wen brands are competitive. I totally agree about the long term problems with vinyl. We've been using Norco (a Jeld-Wen company) in our prefab houses and they are cheap and of decent construction (clad ext, wood int).
Lots of window companies in the upper midwest and I like all mentioned except the looks (not performance) of Pella and installation/construction of Anderson. Never heard of Sun.
Keep in mind that if you're doing full replacement units (not just sash) that the exterior trim must be removed and the windows properly flashed. #1 water problem in homes and cause of mold.
