I replaced 6 windows and 8 sliding glass doors on my house one year ago. They were the original aluminum from the mid 60s. I bought the builder-grade vinyl Pella product that is sold through Lowes. With low-e and argon, the highest price I paid was $800 for an 8-foot door; small sliders were under $150. Custom sizes, choice of color, quality excellent, few installtion hassles. I expect them to last longer than I will, and longer than the original aluminum.
I am a big believer in vinyl. I considered wood double-hung for a remodel job (different house), but at $400 or more each, and lots of maintenance issues, it seemed like, well, kind of like buying a SAAB -- high initial cost and lots of maintenance. If you want the window to just do its job, never have a problem, never get stuck, always look good, and never need paint, it seems to me that a good builder grade vinyl window is the way to go. Why pay more? JMHO and your mileage may vary.
