Not sure why you are replacing the old windows, but if the reason is drafts or difficulty operating, and if the windows are traditional sash-weight double-hungs, you should know that these problems can be solved without replacing the windows. In my area (Boston) there's a cottage industry of fixing these windows so they work like new. The window repair guys re-hang sashweights (preferably using brass chain), install spring bronze weatherstripping, replace locks, etc. Costs less than half the price of a replacement and leaves you with the beautiful true divided-light look of older windows. Put on some top-quality storms (Harvey Tru-Channels), and you've got a completely weathertight solution for less than the cost of replacements. I have both 100-year old handmade windows and 20-year old Marvin windows in my house, and I can tell you that the 100-year olds, properly maintained, look and work a lot better than the Marvins.
