Hey, as far as I'm concerned, thats what the system is there for. You lucked out, and thats great but don't ever feel bad for participating in the system. For every ticket that is "earned" by a careless, ignorant driver, there are dozens written in the name of revenue genreation. Conversely, for every ticket that is fought, there are dozens that are simply paid without a court date. There's nothing wrong with appealing the citation, even if all you're really doing is asking for mercey. I've done this with every ticket I've recevied, and I've always received a favorable outcome. Always. Some I walked away free; others were reduced significantly, but the bottom line is that judeges/magistrates are people too, and they don't always side with the officer. They have considerable discretion in many cases, and they often use this discretion to lessen the offense.
Granted, a wreckless driving/endangernment charge is considerable more serious, and I wouldn't expect one to walk away easily from one of those. I will agree with some others here that the 74 in a 70 was a gift to begin with. In PA (not far from your little indiscretion) thats almost not worth fighting. Its only a point or two and will be gone from your record in a year; most insurance companies wouldn't even be that concerned. Still, 4mph over may have been reduced to an even lesser offense, and no points, so if you have the time, its still worthwhile to contend it.
I aslo feel that there are times to go fast, and there are times to NOT go fast. Virtually everyone speeds on the interstates; even most officers will simply give you up to 10 MPH over without a second glance. 10 over in a school zone, however, is out of line. I'm sure you get the point. Its a common sense thing. I spend a lot of time well over posted limits out in the middle of nowhere on deserted, twisty country roads. Most of this time is on my motorcycle. I rarely encounter other traffic, and there's nothing to hit but tress and guard rails... and big rocks. I slow up to the posted limit in the towns; I'm not out to ruin someones day/life. I've been to advanced driving/riding sshools; I know how to handle my car/bike at speed, but I realize that there are forces you can't account for so I keep it sane in view of the general public. The point of all this is that, if I'm correct. you were at 85 in a 70. to me, thats not excessive in a modern, performance car PROVIDED you can control the car, traffic is light, roads are good, etc. Just realize that eventually when you do get zapped, and you don't get a break, that even though it sucks, you've probably earned it all those other times they DIDN'T catch you :-) :-) :-) Until then, go down swinging!
Cheers!
