Nikon CoolPix 950, then in December to a Nikon D50 DSLR. I can't imagine going back. I know it's not as good as the D70s, but for my uses it's great and I love being able to shoot a couple hundred pictures and pick the ones I want to print. I've used it indoors and out, for people and scenery, and it just does great work.
I used the old Nikon FM (which is manual everything) at the Grand Canyon in November and while it did a good job, I kept wishing I was using a digital. (The CoolPix needs repair). I'd love to try a modern 35mm SLR for comparison to the DSLR, though.
There are great deals to be had on 35mm SLRs these days, but for most uses digital is really superior and I think cheaper over time. The DSLRs *are* overpriced, but if you shop around you can get some good deals. The question in my mind is about longer term durability. I don't see my D50 surviving mountains, snowstorms, deserts and sailboat decks as well as the FM did for 25 years. Of course in another 5 years a 15 MP DSLR will be a consumer item and cost what a 6-8 MP cam does now.
