One of the reasons I went with the D50 is that it will do for now, and in 5 years the D200 (or equiv) will be more affordable. And it was easy to justify the investment as I use it for business and pleasure. The cost of the 200 was hard to justify.
I played with the D70s and the D50 in the store and the 50 was just a bit easier to use, or at least figure out, coming from a Nikon 950 CoolPix. I wanted the point and shoot capes to be brain-dead simple for casual use (wife and kids would use the cam, too), and felt the flexibility of the 50 was a little better than the 70. Price ultimatgely made the deal: I got 2 lenses and the D50 body for much less than the D70 with a standard lens. Had I had a bigger budget I would have gone with the 70, though.
FWIW, the reports at stevesdigicams.com were very helpful, as were those at Ritz and B&H (where I got the cam).
