Soon the lenses will be the more costly part of the DSLR. Meanwhile, as many have said, the differences are features. Quality is not a lot different on these models. I'm told Canon currently has the best digital semiconductor technology, but lots of work is ongoing to improve that, and it will be less expensive as technology advances.
I still am emotionally attached to my 30+ year old Minolta SRT101, and it takes great photos. I bought a newer Minolta Maxxum 50 (I think) a couple of years ago at what I thought was a good price. It hasn't been used much, and 35mm are much cheaper now. But they're also getting harder to find.
My son has a Canon Rebel DSLR. He's taken thousands of photos - many are good, but he can easily try anything, on a whim, and see what works. And he can print whatever he wants - with or without enhancement.
