I have Nikon F (yeah, the original) and a well used FE, and about 8 older, manual lenses, and an Olympus OMn-2, which was great for low light metering. After using a 4 MP digital ELPH point and shoot for nearly two years, I realized that I had not touched the SLRs since getting the Canon, and that I did not really want to. I wanted the instant control of digital and the ability to play with the images on the computer. When the D70s came out, I fell. The advantage of the D200 over the D70 or D50 for older lens users is that it is the first "consumer" Nikon digital SLR that will meter with the old manual lenses. No autofocus for the manuals, but the electronic indicator for focus in all three consumer Nikon SLRs will focus with the old manuals. While the kit lenses are good optically, they are relatively slow. This is a problem for blurring backgrounds at large F stops. I got an autofocus fixed focal length 1.4 50 mm normal lens (the one everyone used to be snooty about not using), and it has been great for low available light shots at 1600 where flash will not do or is not permitted. With the 1.5 lens factor, 50 mm is nearly a portrait lens. Still, the mini point and shoots are easy to carry and still get used a bunch when the SLR is too clunky to drag around. And the old film SLRs? Getting dusty, and every day worth less and less for an eBay sale.

Long term I wonder about Nikon. Canon makes their own sensors, but Nikon must buy from others. Sony, which has supplied Nikon sensors so far, just bought out Konica Minolta's SLR division. Think Nikon will get the best sensors from now on?

(BTW, Pop Photography thinks the image on the D50 is superior to the D70)
