I work at a major newspaper and the director of photography who is a die hard Nikon user admits that the Canon's have an edge. All the photographers use 1D's and have 20D for backup. I got the 20D because I wanted to shoot in RAW mode and with the DigicII processor, I can shoot 5fps up to 6 RAW files (8MB each) with the built in buffer. The XT is a good camera also, but what you are paying for in the 20D is the sensor. 8MP sensor in the XT is not the same sensor in the 20D. You will notice it especially in higher ISO. Newspapers don't shoot raw because they don't need that high of quality and the files are too big. I use the Canon Digital Photo Professional software that comes with the camera to post process all my photos. The 580EX is an excellent flash. Color is very consistent and exposure is very controlable. The other benefit with shooting RAW is if my highlights were a little over exposed or even a little under exposed, I never worry. There is a lot of latitude to correct exposure after the picture is take. Much more than taking a JPEG and converting to 16 bit and using curves in photoshop.
